API Applauds Passage of Coronavirus-Related Relief Bills in State House

Birmingham, Ala. – Today (February 12th, 2021), the Alabama Policy Institute applauded the final passage of HB170 and SB30, two bills for which API has been advocating for nearly a year through its Restore Alabama Plan and which are included in its 2021 legislative scorecard as “YES” votes.

HB170, sponsored by Rep. Danny Garrett and Sen. Dan Roberts, removes impediments to business growth and modernizes the tax code of Alabama into one more attractive to business and investment. The bill also ensures that coronavirus relief funds received by Alabama residents and businesses are not taxable by the state of Alabama. It passed unanimously in both the House and Senate.

SB30, sponsored by Sen. Arthur Orr, protects Alabama businesses from frivolous litigation by claimants seeking lawsuits under the idea that a business was at fault for coronavirus-related injuries. It passed in the Senate by a vote of 28-1 and in the House by a vote of 86-4.

In May 2020, API’s “RESTORE Alabama” Plan highlighted the importance of both of these bills by suggesting for them to be included in a special session to be called by the governor. We applaud the state legislature for its quick passage of these essential and timely bills.
