Louisiana Gaming Control Board signs order to suspend prop bets on college athletes

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The Louisiana Gaming Control Board issued an order to suspend proposition bets on college athletes in the state.

Any wagers on “any proposition or prop bet on an individual athlete’s performance or statistics participating in a college sporting event,” will not be permitted, according to the Louisiana Gaming Control Board. Prop bets on full team numerical results will be allowed.

According to Draft Kings, a prop bet or proposition bet “is a wager on an individual player or specific event in a game/match that is not directly connected to the outcome of a game.”

The announcement comes just days after NCAA President Charlier Baker urged states with legal wagering to ban prop bets on college athletes. Baker recently issued the following statement:

“Sports betting issues are on the rise across the country with prop bets continuing to threaten the integrity of competition and leading to student-athletes and professional athletes getting harassed. The NCAA has been working with states to deal with these threats and many are responsible by banning college prop bets.”

“Our staff began to work on this weeks ago, well ahead of the NCAA’s call for action on college proposition bets,” said Ronnie Johns, Chairman of the Louisiana Gaming Control Board. “It is the intention of the Louisiana Gaming Control Board to protect the integrity of sports betting as well as the safety and integrity of college athletes. We feel that this order accomplishes that goal.”

The suspension of prop bets on college athletes in Louisiana will go into effect at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 1.
