API Poll: Gambling expansion not a top priority for GOP Voters

A recent poll commissioned by the Alabama Policy Institute (API) shows that the planned expansion of statewide gambling is not a primary concern for Republican voters ahead of the 2024 legislative session.

The Alabama Policy Institute this week published a new, exhaustive report detailing its position on why expanding gambling is problematic for the state and its future.

API President Stephanie Smith said her organization hopes lawmakers considering a gambling bill will see the report and understand the drawbacks.

“API’s comprehensive report outlines that states that have legalized gambling experience higher rates of gambling addiction, crime, corruption, addiction, and mental health disorders,” Smith said. “Gambling is a bad bet for Alabama families.”

Alabama Policy Institute releases study on legalizing gambling in Alabama: ‘Gambling is a bad bet for Alabama families’

API’s report outlines that states that have legalized gambling experience higher rates of gambling addiction, crime, corruption, addiction, and mental health disorders. With more opportunities to gamble, the negative impact of gambling increases. This is especially true as gambling is normalized for children; early and increased exposure to gambling leads to increases in addiction that can cause emotional damage, strained relationships, and financial ruin.

API commissioned a report on the state of gambling in the state of Alabama, and one thing is abundantly clear: Gambling is a bad bet for Alabama families.

STUDY RELEASED ON EFFECTS OF LEGALIZED GAMBLING

Alabama Policy Institute has released findings from a study on gambling.

The group says it shows states that have legalized gambling experience higher rates of gambling addiction, crime, corruption, and mental health disorders. And shows gambling is especially dangerous for children.

The policy institute says the study was done in response to renewed calls to change the state constitution and legalize gambling.
